Photobooth (1 & 2)

This assignment was for my Experimental Cinema class, it’s inspired by Andy Warhol’s Ethel Scull 36 Times. The assignment was to pick an artwork that was on display at the Whitney and recreate it in video format.

Ethel Schull 36 Times

This piece reminded me of photos taken in a photo booth so I decided to lean into that idea. In Photobooth, I took multiple pictures of my friend posing and having a good time to represent Ethel’s personality. After shooting the photos, I arranged them on a timeline and altered the color of each photo to mimic Warhol’s original piece. I added music that was upbeat and lively. I chose this song because I could imagine Warhol playing it during his shoot with Ethel.

For my final in Experimental Cinema, I was told to pick one of my projects and make a recreation of it. I enjoyed experimenting with photography and videography so I decided to recreate Photobooth. In Photobooth Part 2, I use less color and played around with incorporating video footage. The pace changes during the transitions between certain photos because in some of the photos I wanted it to look like there was movement even though they were still images. I wanted to evoke those same feelings of playfulness from Photobooth in Photobooth Part 2.

Paint

The prompt for this assignment was to use video to portray a dream I had. This project was a challenge because dreams are abstract and fragmented, but it was fun to see everything come together once I started working on the video. My dream was about painting, I remembered seeing glimpses of colored swirls and strokes. I also remember hearing Bob Ross’s voice which was odd because I’ve never followed one of his painting tutorials before.

I shot footage of paint bottles and paint swirls. For the audio, I found clips from Bob Ross’s videos and created a mashup of his voice. I wanted to portray that my dream was calm but also confusing. I represented the confusion by painting random strokes and swirls. I evoked a calm feeling through the slow pacing and by using Bob Ross’s soothing voice.
